In the rough and ready days, when Johannesburg was hardly more than a mining camp, the Chamber was already playing a pivotal role in the rapidly expanding business community.
Founded in1890, the Chamber quickly became the leading business organization in the region. From inception it concerned itself with promoting and facilitating international trade between the remote outpost at the tip of Africa and the rest of the commercial world. Since then the Chamber has developed a reputation as an impartial third party in the promotion of business for its members and as the region’s foremost link between local and overseas business.
The Chamber takes most seriously its duty to fairly and impartially represent the interests of the business community and to provide a leadership role on matters of concern. As the voice of business, in the years since 1890, the Chamber has lobbied government on issues such as taxes, transport, monopolies, and price controls.
The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC was established in 1856 and is the oldest and largest metropolitan chamber in Africa. As a business-based and member-focused organisation, we work to protect and promote the interests of the eThekwini business community.
The mandate of the Durban Chamber requires it to lobby and advocate on behalf of its members by addressing and identifying pertinent issues and forwarding them to appropriate forums in which business practitioners, through robust strategic engagements with stakeholders, drill down into issues and provide experience-based insights.
A key and valuable strength of the Durban Chamber is constant engagement in its area and standing forums. These forums provide insight into the common challenges faced by the business communities of specific regions. They also identify key opportunities that can be created by enabling a resilient and conducive business environment.
The Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Commerce was established in Pietermaritzburg in 1885, followed by the first Chamber of Industries, which was formed in 1910. It wasn’t until 1993 that the Chambers of Commerce and Industry combined to form the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI). Our first truly representative chamber, the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business (PCB), came into being on 1st August 2002 with the unification of the PCCI, the Midlands Black Business Forum and the Pietermaritzburg Sakekamer. On the 25th July 2019, a decision was taken to broaden the mandate of the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business (PCB), to include the Midlands area and the organisation was renamed: The Pietermaritzburg & Midlands Chamber of Business (PMCB).
The PMCB is a voluntary association of business enterprises representing businesses of all sizes, across sectors. We are the voice of business in our region, representing business interests and advocating for a more conducive environment. The PMCB is a comprehensively united business organisation enjoying wide credibility and the full confidence of government at all levels.
As an association and as individuals we embrace diversity and value unity, integrity, personal and corporate excellence, mutual respect, and co-operation. We are committed to serving our members and society at large, and we are passionate about economic and enterprise development, skills development, and job creation.
With respect to Organisational Governance, the PMCB is a registered Non-profit Company in terms of the Companies Act no. 71 of 2008, a registered Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) and a registered Non-profit Organisation (027-519-NPO).
With around 700 member businesses and over 155 years of rich heritage, the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber remains one of the most trusted, respected and authoritative voices on matters relating to local business and the economy.
The environment we operate in is changing at a rapid pace and requires ongoing agility to ensure that we robustly respond to issues that impact upon the sustainability of local businesses, the functionality of the operating environment, leverage economic growth opportunities, while simultaneously providing value-adding services to our members.
For this reason, we have adopted a more activist, collaborative and action orientated approach in pursuing our vision of being the leading catalyst for Nelson Mandela Bay to retain and attract business.
